Week 39: Summer Camp, Dates and a Movie, Oasis in the Desert (Dec 29, 2013 – Jan 4, 2014)

Staying a couple weeks at an RV park just outside Palm Springs. What’s it like? If you had fun as a youngster at summer camp, you’d have fun here. Warm swimming pool, hot tub, daily billiard tournaments, evening card games, visiting friends at their trailer/fifth wheel, bicycling, walking, movies, and a variety of activities each day. Sherry and I bicycle together. One ride was great until she skinned her elbow and knee, and received a big, beautiful hip bruise. Owies are never fun, and she is healing fine.

Coachella Valley grows 95% of all the dates in the U.S. Dates are tastiest fresh picked from the tree. We do our best to sample as many of the 100 varieties as possible. Took my lovely bride for a date shake and a movie at Shields Dates, the oldest date farm around here. Movie is “Romance and Sex Life of the Date”. PG rated and entertaining while learning all about the work involved growing dates. I know. I’m such a romantic date! <grin>

A few of our retired friends don’t do email, so we send custom postcards to them. We go online to Click2Mail.com. Simply upload pics, add a few comments here and there, indicate where to mail them, add a credit card for payment, and voila, they arrive at their destinations a few days later. Sweet! The US Post Office hosts it all. They lose money every year, but they sure provide a lot of useful services.

Monday evening, Bob joins guitarists Gary and Doug, plus violinist Franklin, at the Park for a fun jam session. Plenty of support from thirty or so RVers who applaud and sing along.

Highly recommend hiking the Coachella Valley Preserve. Forests of palm trees and an oasis in the middle of this desolate desert.

Sherry is a fantastic cook, making steak and lobster for dinner. On New Year’s Eve the Park hosts games and music, and, as usual, Bob is fast asleep before midnight.

It’s always wonderful to read your emails. This week, try something out of your comfort zone: Something that is harmless, but the mere thought of it scares you to even try. (Like knocking on a neighbor’s door you’ve never met, or singing karaoke?) We will see you again next time On Our Adventure!
