Week 27: Oct 6 – 12, 2013 Hissing Tire, Alaskan Halibut BBQ, Spruce Goose, Susan and Laela

Helping people is so much fun! We pull into the Rest Area in Weed, OR. Hear hissing from the trailer next to us. Turns out to be a defective tire for Pat and Teresa. (What a God thing, parking us next to their trailer, and letting us hear a quiet hiss among all the other car and truck noises.) We see Pat and Teresa again at our RV Park and casino. Small world!

Upon arrival at Seven Feathers RV Resort in Canyonville, OR, we are amazed at this resort. Heated swimming pool, hot tub, workout room, shuttle service anywhere in town, flat concrete pads, wifi, cable tv, water, sewer, electric. We stay longer than planned.

The RV Park discounts the nightly fee when we get a free Players Card at the Casino, which we promptly get. We play a few slots, looking like we are tethered to the slot machines because the players cards have lanyards. We chuckle. Sherry wins a little at Black Jack, and I win a little at Craps. Time to head home after enjoying some Huckleberry ice cream at the casino. Back at the RV Park, we swap stories with other full time RVers while everyone soaks in the hot tub.

We help Gary and Rosemary unload stuff for their BBQ, and they invite us to join in their Alaskan halibut BBQ. Wow! Great food and more fun talking with Dave and Diana, and others from their Elks Club RV group.

The nights are getting cool, but we are toasty warm sleeping all night under our comfy down comforter. Enjoyed the sound of it raining last night while tucked in a warm bed.

The Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, OR, is excellent! Finally get my chance to see Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose, plus a bunch of other antique aircraft that are all in flying condition. Volunteers Rosemary, Bob, and Mary Lou share some of their memories with us.

Rosemary tells us a wonderful story about a U.S. B-17 pilot whose plane was all shot up while over Germany during World War II, yet was guided toward the safety of England by a German pilot. Decades later the two pilots meet while independently telling the same story at a gathering of war veterans, remaining friends forever after. How amazing is that!

Laela and Bob

Laela and Bob

Laela is so cool. While visiting her, she shares about her travels to nine countries in Europe, visiting relatives living in Denmark from Mom’s side of our family. Delicious Thai dinner together. Our RV Park has no showers, and Laela lets us shower at her home, which is a whole lot nicer than showering in our trailer’s tiny shower stall. When Sherry and I first married, we lived in a house with no running water, and we used to carry clean clothes and soap with us all the time, showering at friends’ on a regular basis. Funny how we’ve come full circle!

Dinner at the Olive Garden with Susan is a wonderful time listening to her share from her childhood. Visiting siblings sure provides an insight into ourselves.

    Bob,
Great stories! I’m living my life vicariously through your journeys. Please share about the ins and outs of driving with your household in tow. This is something I would eventually like to do.

The trailer pulls easily. We use a hitch load balancer to distribute the weigh onto the frame instead of the ball carrying all the load, and anti sway bar to reduce side movement in wind. Lots of different floor plans so find the one right for you.

  2. It has been sooooo much fun following your adventure! When I think back one year ago, I can’t help but PTL for all His goodness. I can’t stop smiling.
